Introduction

Liposomes are a type of polymeric nanoparticles used for drug delivery due to their unique advantages. Liposomes are able to encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug. In the past decades, liposomes have been thought as desirable models for mimic biological membranes and are also suitable carriers for drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, and other bioactive agents. There are four types of lipid-based drug delivery systems: solid-lipid particulate system, emulsion-based system, solid lipid tablet and vesicular system. The vesicular drug delivery systems are promising approaches to overcome the disadvantages of drugs having lesser bioavailability and rapid elimination from the body. Cryptosomes, also known as stealth liposomes or immune-liposomes, which are one of the vesicular drug delivery systems, and formed from the mixture of phospholipids like distearoyl phosphatidyl ethanolamine-polyethylene glycol (DSPE-PEG) with distearoylphosphatidylcholine. Cryptosomes can achieve the goal to circulate for longer periods of time in vivo.
